Banded Peak Brewing and Guardians of the Ice Speaker Series

Calgary, Albrta: On September 22, 2022, Banded Peak Brewing will host the fourth of their Guardians of the Ice Speaker Series in a live event at The Hemingway Room. Guardians of the Ice is a non-profit organization that works to inspire dynamic environmental stewardship on behalf of the rapidly retreating Columbia Icefield (Canadian Rockies) and its watersheds, leading to a low-carbon future for the whole planet. The fourth beer of the Guardians of the Ice collection is named for Mount Bryce, which stands at the southwestern corner of the Columbia Icefield in British Columbia, near the border with Alberta. To the north, it is connected by ridges to the Columbia Icefield. The rapid warming of climate change has caused a severe loss of ice and snowpack from Mount Bryce’s north face.

Join us for an evening of candid, inspiring conversation, beer tasting and Q&A in support of the Columbia Icefield. The event will be hosted by legendary alpinist and Guardians of the Ice Founder Jim Elzinga and features keynote speakers Quentin Roberts, Robert (Bob) Sandford and Banded Peak brewer Mark Zabot, who will let us in on the unique aspects of Mount Bryce Cold IPA.

Quentin Roberts is one of Canada’s leading alpinists. He started climbing in Wales with his father, but it was not until he moved to Canada that he found his calling in alpinism. Over the past 10 years Quentin has been climbing professionally, pushing to explore unclimbed terrain in the world’s hardest mountain ranges. He has climbed new routes from the granite spires of Patagonia to the glacier-clad mountains of the Himalayas. He recently climbed a new route in the Peruvian Andes, and made a rare solo ascent of Torre Egger, a 2,685m tower in Patagonia, an extraordinary achievement.

GOTI founder Jim Elzinga has been a friend and mentor of Quentin’s for several years; they share a love of climbing, a passion for wild places, and a minimum-impact ethos. Alpine climbers interact intimately with their environment and experience the effects of climate change firsthand.

Quentin speaks about his Presentation Summit Views: A life committed: “The absurd pursuit of alpinism affects profound change in the individual. Dedicating oneself to exploration allows for a shift in perspective and deeper insight into both the workings of our natural environment, and ourselves as human beings. These stories will take you with me on my journey through life and the wildest mountain ranges on earth.”

Bob Sandford speaks about his presentation, The Unseen Suddenly Seen: Visualizing Climate Change Effects on Canada’s Mountains: “Recent scientific evidence clearly demonstrates that the world’s high mountains are now warming as fast as the Arctic, which in some places is four to seven times faster than the global average. What does that look like now, here in Canada, and how different will our mountain world be if temperatures at altitude continue to rise? I will show you what a warmer alpine world may look like and in so doing underscore why Guardians of the Ice is an important initiative to support.”

Bob is an internationally distinguished expert on climate and water. He holds the Global Water Futures Chair in Water and Climate Security at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. Bob was the co-author of the UN Water in the World We Want report on post-2015 global sustainable development goals relating to water. He is also lead author of Canada in the Global World, a new United Nations report examining the capacity of Canada’s water sector to meet and help others meet the United Nations 2030 Transforming Our World water-related Sustainable Development Goals.

Bob is also a Fellow of the Centre for Hydrology at the University of Saskatchewan and a member of Canada’s Forum for Leadership on Water (FLOW), a national water policy research group centred in Toronto. Bob is the author, co-author, or editor of more than thirty books, including Our Vanishing Glaciers, featuring the Columbia Icefield.

Mount Bryce Cold IPA is the fourth of the GOTI series. $2 from every four-pack sold will be donated to support Guardians of the Ice. By drinking the GOTI collection you are helping protect one of North America’s most important water resources.
